How to Return to Work After Having a Baby

So you’ve had a baby and now it’s time to head back to work. Let’s be honest, it sucks. You’re most likely sleep deprived, stressed, and anxious about leaving your little one. Here is my suggestions to making a smooth transition back to work.

BABY1. If you have someone to help, work out the feeding schedule with them. This will allow for you both to get a long stretch of sleep to best rest for the upcoming day. My hubby typically does the last night feeding, which normally happens between 8 – 10 pm. This means I get to bed around 8 pm and then will take the next feeding, which for our little one is around 3 am. This way we both get a good 6 hour period of sleeping. It is also important to consider who can function better with less sleep.

2. Getting out the door, getting ready, and getting to the sitter then to work all takes extra time and adds stress. This means prepping as much as possible the night before it key! I’ve switched to showering at night and laying out my clothes. Let’s be honest, getting dressed is still tough. Can you say #postpartumbodprobs?

3. On maternity leave you spend day and night with your little one, and about to embark on 8 hour stretches without them. This is a big difference, plus that means someone else is watching them. To cut down on the anxiety, you will want to find someone you completely trust and feel comfortable taking care of your baby. It’s also a plus if your sitter sends pictures and updates while you’re at work.

4. My other suggestion is to stretch out your leave. I’m lucky to have banked paid time off. I will be working for the next 6 weeks at a part-time status. Personally, this is helping with getting the little one on a new schedule. During leave, the world revolves around the little one, and now it’s shifting to the clock and coordinating schedules of everyone else. I also think this is a great way to transition a sitter into the addition of another child.

How much time did you take off/ plan to take off for your baby? Any suggestions you have?

Great post! I have so much respect for moms who return to work after baby. I currently work from home with my little guy and feel very lucky, although some days I realize that it sure would be nice to get out of the house LOL

Great tips. Going back to work after having a baby is really tough. That’s a great idea of asking the sitter to send pictures and videos while you’re at work. Thanks for sharing at Inspiration Thursday! Happy first day of fall!
